Inspiring and equipping Quebec engineers to take action for the climate

Two speeches with the same objective: to integrate climate action at the heart of engineering practice, for the benefit of SMEs.

As part of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) annual symposium, QNP (Québec Net Positif) was privileged to take part in two flagship activities:

  • a 90-minute conferencehosted by Anne-Josée Laquerre, CEO and co-initiator of QNP, entitled Agir aux moments clés pour stimuler l’action climatique en entreprise;
  • a three-hour course co-hosted by Anne-Josée and Rachel Lefrancois, Project Analyst, Integrating climate action into engineering practice.

These two sessions, rich in exchange and participation, demonstrated the strategic role that engineers can play towards a low-carbon economic transformation that is resilient in the face of climate change.

Exclusive data and concrete levers

Drawing on data from the QNP Quebec Business Transition Barometer, the presentations highlighted several key findings:

  • 52% of Quebec companies have been affected by climatic phenomena (or their derivatives) over the past year.
  • companies benefiting from internal or external environmental expertise implement almost twice as many climate actionsas those declaring that they “do not rely” on such expertise
  • and theaverage Transition Index in Quebec is 33– i.e., Quebec companies are implementing one-third of known and desirable climate actions to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) – illustrating the urgency of collective action.

Based on this data, QNP illustrated the moments of truth facing companies: operational aspects, investments, value chain, resilience, organizational culture. The concrete examples presented – from Kruger Products to Cascades, via Entosystem and Soleno – helped to embody the levers of action in different engineering contexts.

Mobilizing professionals to accelerate transformation

The success of these activities is based on one conviction: the more climate issues are integrated into professional practice, the more Quebec SMEs will benefit from relevant expertise to help them make informed decisions. This approach is directly in line with QNP’s mission:

Create winning conditions for SMEs to multiply their climate actions while seizing business opportunities.

The recording of the conference will soon be available for replay on the OIQ’s continuing education platform, enabling a greater number of engineers to equip themselves to act at key moments of climate and economic transformation.

What next?

QNP’s ambition is clear: to extend these collaborations to other professional orders in order to strengthen the integration of adaptation and mitigation in all corporate functions.

Because, as demonstrated by our collaboration with Project Drawdownon the“Your job is a climate job” action guide, it is not only possible, but crucial, to integrate climate issues into every corporate function, every job and every business decision.
