Main highlights from the study
Consult the press releaseThe main source of pressure for SMEs comes from within, and more specifically from employees.
For the 26% of SMEs (10-249 employees) that report experiencing strong pressure to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the main source comes from employees (27%).
The veil is lifted on the elements that trigger the transition to action.
The main element that triggers action from companies is the global situation regarding the environment/climate crisis (40%).
Businesses in Quebec say they are challenged to take action for the climate regardless of the importance of climate issues within their business sector.
While 28% believe that climate issues are important within their sector, 84% feel that it is urgent to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and 85% agree that companies have a central role to play in reducing greenhouse gases.
Even if they believe it is urgent to act, companies are slow to take action.
While 86% claim to be motivated to do things differently, nearly half (48%) of companies report not taking any climate action within their operations and less than a quarter (24%) of respondents indicate witnessing tangible examples that the transition to a low-carbon economy is already underway in their sector.
Climate literacy is more necessary today than ever.
When asked about their familiarity with several climate-related terms, 23% of respondents revealed that they were unable to explain any of the choices in their own words.
Over the next two years, the optimization of energy management will be the main new climate action implemented.
In addition to the actions already underway, climate actions related to optimizing energy management are the most often considered over the next two years (44%), including reducing the company’s digital footprint (44%), measuring and improving the energy efficiency of buildings (38%), and transitioning to sustainable energy sources (36%).
