Putting people at the heart of the transition

Organizational culture is the determining factor for explaining climate action. The average index is higher in companies that benefit from:

Environmental expertise (58,2 vs 25,0)

Committed management team (42.8 if aware of benefits, 41.3 if committed, 39.0 if aware of risks)

Committed sales (49.6 if committed, 49.1 if aware of profits, 47.1 if aware of risks)

Customers: the main source of pressure

Customers are the main source of pressure prompting companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (33%), a significant increase compared to 18% in 2022.

Triggers: awareness and mobilization

The two most important triggers for organizational climate action are the concerns and ideas of employees and managers, on a par with the global environmental situation/climate crisis (35%).

The significant gap between the desire to act and taking action persists.

While 82% of leaders believe it is urgent to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, 68% feel well equipped to take action, and 57% report implementing at least one climate action within their operations.

Our recommendations 2023

Companies with in-house or external environmental expertise have a Transition Index of 58.2, compared with 25 for those without. They are therefore implementing more than twice as many climate actions.

The presence of environmental expertise is the key factor determining climate action within businesses in Quebec, regardless of sector, size, or region.

In particular, those that rely on at least one full-time resource and/or an external advisory committee implement more actions and are more likely to be aligned with a credible transition pathway.

L’engagement des dirigeant(e)s est en lien direct avec la mise en œuvre d’actions climatiques et tous les aspects de l’alignement sur une trajectoire de transition.

The knowledge of significant GHG emission sources of the company, even without having completed a full GHG inventory, is directly related to the implementation of climate actions.

With the climate crisis, it is the ideas and concerns of employees and managers that are the two main triggers for companies to take action.
In the face of increasing extreme weather events, to be considered “aligned on a plausible transition pathway”, companies need to be aware of the key risks inherent in climate change and the transition to a low-carbon economy across their entire value chain, and put in place transition plans to address them.
Customers are the main source of pressure for companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the image and reputation of the company are the main benefits reported by companies that take action.
At the same time, 80% of leaders in Quebec are unable to explain in their own words what greenwashing is.
In this context, the risk that companies respond to customer pressure and attempt to generate profit from ‘green’ products and solutions for their brand image without public claims being based on facts or reliable data is very real.
Committed and ethical companies want – and must – to remain a highly credible source of information about the performance of their operations, products, and services.
It is time for Quebec and Canada to follow the lead of the many international jurisdictions that already regulate environmental declarations. A clear and predictable legal framework will enable businesses to innovate and maintain trusting relationships with citizens, allowing them to make informed choices in accordance with their values and interests.

60% of Quebec leaders declare that they are unable to explain in their own words what carbon neutrality is.

87% are unable to explain what decarbonization is and 86% cannot explain what direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are. Furthermore, 50% of executives are unable to explain biodiversity in their own words.

To successfully transition to a low-carbon economy, it is essential that all leaders are equipped to participate in a constructive dialogue on the subject. It is our collective responsibility to help increase climate literacy within the business ecosystem of Quebec.
