Main highlights from the study
Consult the press releaseThe average Transition Index for manufacturing companies in Quebec is 29.9.
This means that these implement less than a third of the known and desirable climate actions related to their operations, their value chains, their organizational culture, and climate change adaptation.
Little-known financial aid
Although financial incentives are one of the triggers for taking action, the majority of manufacturing companies (58%) reveal that they are unaware of any of the main financial programs on offer.
Resilience and adaptation
65% of manufacturing companies say they are completely confident that their business is resilient and ready to cope with the potential consequences of climate change/extreme weather events.
18% have drawn up or are in the process of drawing up a list of potential threats or disruptions to their supply chain caused by climate change.
The analysis of the 'personas' reveals that 42% of manufacturing companies in Quebec can be classified as 'Enthusiasts'.
In the face of the urgency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), the risks and business opportunities to seize, they are seeking information on ways to act. Nevertheless, half of manufacturing companies indicate that they are not implementing climate actions in their operations and two-thirds are not engaged in energy efficiency measures.
Our manufacturing sector recommendations 2023
1.
Trigger the move to action and take one step further.
Ensure reliance on expertise both internally and externally, including that found among its stakeholders (clients, suppliers, competitors, industry associations, and more).
Access the funding programs offered (Energy efficiency; sustainable mobility and other support in climate action)
2.
Know your significant emission sources
Collaborate in the value chain and with experts
Access open, anonymized, sectoral or regional data
3.
Bet on the strategic role of leaders and boards of directors
Train the board members in ‘Effective Climate Governance’.
Raise awareness and mobilize leaders regarding the risks and business opportunities related to climate and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Develop/acquire relevant skills within the management team, managers, and all employees.
4.
Recommendations for players in the business ecosystem
Maturity level of companies
Implement actions suitable for their level of maturity to help them take another step forward, through the Transition Index and the company personas.
Productivity and energy efficiency
Identify relevant concrete actions on a sectoral or regional basis and promote them to manufacturing companies, including funding programs and available expertise to accelerate implementation.
3.Measurement of GHGs and knowledge of significant GHG emissions
Promote the sharing of GHG data to enable as many companies as possible to benefit from the knowledge already available.
Generate open, anonymized, sectoral data by value chain.
4.Climate-related risks and adaptation
Identify physical risks with experts and assist businesses in preparing for them both individually and collectively (clusters, sectoral associations, economic development agencies, etc.)
5. Standards, laws, and regulations
Access business intelligence and surveillance to better anticipate the rapid evolution of the regulatory context and help manufacturing SMEs prepare for it (e.g., Québec Net Positif offers a newsletter on this topic)
